With a combination of NEMA 23 stepper motors on the X and Y axis and a NEMA 34 motor on the Z axis, you can have enough power for milling heavy workpieces. While NEMA 23 motors can be used on all three axes, the heavy weight of the Z axis calls for a high-performance motor, making NEMA 34 apt for the job.
